Direct Metal Laser Sintering

Direct Metal Laser Sintering is an additive manufacturing technique able to fuse together fine powder layers using a laser beam.

The Direct Metal Laser Sintering process is suitable for the creation of metal components, both pre-series ready for testing and final production parts. The materials are fit for post-machining operations, such as milling, CNC turning, thermal treatments and aesthetic and protective surface treatments.Direct Metal Laser Sintering is the ideal solution for the manufacturing of small batches and final production parts with no tooling costs involved. This technology builds fully dense, almost 100%, components, from numerous alloys and metals including Steel 316L, Steel 7-4 PH, Chromo-Cobalt, Aluminium AlSi10Mg and Titanium grade 5 Ti6Al4V.

The Direct Metal Laser Sintering technology is extremely innovative and offers the opportunity to realize not only prototypes but also final metal parts, without the necessity of developing tools or moulds.DMLS is a so-called FREE FORM FABRICATION TECHNOLOGY, which permits the manufacturing of free and complex shaped parts, internal concavities and channels impossible to realize with the traditional fabrication methods. Moreover, from a weight saving point of view, which is of the utmost importance in the aeronautic and aerospace sector, components with thicknesses less than 1 mm can be manufactured even out of reactive alloys, such as Titanium Ti64, or metals difficult to melt. As a result, their total weight is drastically reduced and the buy-to-fly ration considerably optimized.DMLS is the perfect technology is for the production of high precision and rich detailed jewellery parts, simplifying post-manufacturing processes.

Through the DMLS technique it is possible to create the most complex components that would have been all but impossible to produce using the common technologies .

  • Ti6Al4V (titanium grade 5): Titanium Ti64 has excellent mechanical properties, an exceptional corrosion resistance, a low specific weight and a high bio-compatibility. This alloy meats the demands of high performance applications in the aerospace, racing and medical fields. The Titanium parts can afterwards be refined with traditional methods.
